Choosing examination tables and clinic furniture

The examination table is used every working day for a decade or more. It is the wrong place to save four thousand rupees.

Clinic examination room with medical furniture

Clinic furniture gets bought late in a fit-out, when the budget is nearly spent. That sequencing is why so many consulting rooms have equipment that fights the clinician daily for the next decade.

The examination table

This is the piece to get right. It is used every working day, it is difficult to replace once the room is built around it, and it directly affects both patient safety and clinician back health.

Height, and why adjustability matters

A fixed table sits around 70–75 cm. That is comfortable for the clinician and a genuine obstacle for elderly, obese, disabled or pregnant patients, who then need help climbing on — which is when falls happen.

A height-adjustable table that lowers to roughly 50 cm lets patients sit down and swing their legs up, then raises to working height. If you buy one upgrade in the consulting room, make it this one.

  • Hydraulic (foot pump): no power needed, reliable, slower
  • Electric: faster and easier, needs a power point, more to service

Upholstery — where cheap tables fail

Look for medical-grade vinyl over high-density foam with welded or heat-sealed seams. Stitched seams admit fluid, harbour contamination and split. That is the failure point on almost every budget table.

Confirm the upholstery tolerates the disinfectant in your protocol — some agents degrade vinyl quickly, and you will discover this after the surface has cracked.

Load rating

Specify against your real patient population with margin. Ratings assume evenly distributed static weight; a patient sitting on the edge concentrates load at one end. This is a safety specification, not a place to economise.

Other details

  • Adjustable backrest — for semi-recumbent examination
  • Paper roll holder — trivial, used constantly
  • Step stool — with a non-slip top and a wide, stable base
  • Drawers or shelf — keeps supplies at hand rather than across the room
  • Castors with brakes, if the table needs to move; make sure the brakes genuinely hold

Trolleys and stands

  • Instrument trolley: stainless steel, two or three shelves, castors with at least two braked. Check the shelf edges are rolled, not raw cut.
  • Dressing trolley: with a rail or basin ring, sized to your dressing packs
  • Mayo stand: height-adjustable, stable under a loaded tray
  • IV stand: five-leg base is markedly more stable than four; check the height lock does not slip

Stainless steel grade matters for anything cleaned with strong disinfectants — ask which grade, as you would for instruments.

Storage and clinical support furniture

  • Instrument cabinet: glass-fronted, lockable where controlled items are stored
  • Bedside locker: for wards; check the top surface tolerates cleaning
  • Overbed table: height-adjustable, stable enough to lean on
  • Screens: for privacy; check the castors roll and the frame does not rack
  • Revolving stool: gas-lift with a five-star base and a back support — clinicians sit on these for hours

Plan the room, not the items

Before ordering, sketch the room:

  • Can the clinician reach the trolley from the examination position without walking?
  • Is there clear access on the side patients will get on and off from?
  • Is the hand-wash point reachable without crossing the room?
  • Where does the step stool live when not in use, so it is not a trip hazard?
  • Are power points where the electric table and any equipment actually need them?

Ten minutes with a floor plan prevents a decade of walking around badly placed furniture.

Frequently asked questions

Clinic furniture — FAQs

A fixed table at roughly 70–75 cm suits general examination, but elderly and mobility-limited patients struggle to climb onto it. A height-adjustable table that lowers to around 50 cm removes that problem and protects the clinician's back — it is the single best upgrade in a consulting room.

Medical-grade vinyl over high-density foam, with welded or heat-sealed seams rather than stitched ones. Stitched seams admit fluid and split; that is where cheap tables fail first. Confirm the upholstery tolerates the disinfectant your protocol uses.

Electric or hydraulic height adjustment is worth it wherever you examine elderly, obese, disabled or pregnant patients, or perform procedures. For a purely consultative practice seeing mobile adults, a well-built fixed table is adequate.

Specify honestly against your actual patient population, and add margin. Load ratings assume static, evenly distributed weight; a patient sitting on the edge loads one end far more. Under-specifying here is a safety issue, not a cost saving.
