Equipment list for opening a new clinic in Kerala
Setting up a clinic is mostly a sequencing problem. Buy in the wrong order and capital sits idle in a store room while the consulting room is short of essentials.
Most new clinics do not fail because they bought bad equipment. They struggle because they bought things in the wrong order — capital committed to a well-appointed waiting room while the procedure room is short of basics.
This is a room-by-room list, with a note on what genuinely comes first.
Consulting room
- Consulting table and chairs, patient stool
- Examination table or couch, with a step stool — this is the item to buy properly. It is used every day for years.
- Examination light
- Screen or curtain rail for privacy
- Stethoscope, sphygmomanometer or digital BP monitor
- Thermometer, torch, measuring tape
- Weighing scale and height rod
- Hand-wash basin with liquid soap and paper towels
- Storage cabinet for instruments and stationery
- Sharps container and colour-coded waste bins
Procedure / dressing room
- Procedure or minor OT table, height-adjustable if budget allows
- Instrument trolley and dressing trolley
- Mayo stand
- Examination or spot light

- Suction machine if the practice requires it
- Emergency tray and, where applicable, oxygen with a flowmeter
- IV stand, transfer trolley or stretcher
Sterilisation
- Autoclave sized to your instrument turnover — undersized autoclaves become the bottleneck of a whole clinic
- Instrument washing and drying area
- Sterilisation pouches and indicators
- Storage for sterile packs, dated and rotated
Get the autoclave capacity right at purchase. Replacing it a year later because instrument throughput doubled is an avoidable cost.
Lab corner (if applicable)
- Microscope
- Centrifuge
- Glucometer and strips, haemoglobin meter
- Sample collection materials — vacutainers, needles, holders, racks
- Refrigerator for reagents and samples
- Lab bench, stool and dedicated hand-wash point
- Biohazard waste containers
Reception and waiting area
- Reception desk and chair
- Waiting chairs — start conservatively, add as footfall becomes clear
- Filing or record storage, or computer and printer if records are digital
- Drinking water point
- Signage and display board
This is the room to under-buy initially. Patient volume will tell you what you need within three months.
Across the whole clinic
- Colour-coded biomedical waste bins per applicable regulations
- Fire extinguisher and first-aid kit
- PPE — gloves, masks, aprons
- Disinfectants and cleaning supplies
- Power backup for essential equipment
The order to buy in
- Anything you cannot legally or safely open without — waste segregation, sterilisation, emergency provisions
- Consulting and examination essentials — the table, light, diagnostic basics
- Procedure room, scaled to the procedures you will actually do in month one
- Lab, if you are running one from the start rather than referring out
- Waiting area, minimally, then expand
- Higher-value diagnostic equipment, once utilisation is evidenced
Two common mistakes
Buying for the clinic you hope to have in three years. Equipment depreciates and technology moves. Buy for the next twelve months.
Skimping on the examination table and autoclave. These are used constantly and are miserable to replace once the room is fitted around them.
