Choosing an autoclave for a clinic or dental practice
An undersized autoclave becomes the bottleneck of an entire clinic. Size it to your busiest day, not your average one.

The autoclave is the piece of clinic equipment most often bought on price and most often regretted. It is also the one whose failure stops the practice entirely.
Cycle classes: what they actually mean
Class N
Gravity displacement. Handles solid, unwrapped instruments only. Air is displaced by steam rather than actively removed, so steam cannot reliably reach the inside of hollow instruments or penetrate wrapped packs. Cheapest, and adequate only for practices sterilising simple solid instruments for immediate use.
Class S
An intermediate class. The manufacturer defines what it can process — typically some wrapped and some hollow loads. If you are considering a Class S unit, get the manufacturer’s stated load types in writing and check your actual instruments against that list.
Class B
Fractionated vacuum: air is actively pumped out in pulses before steam is admitted. Handles wrapped, hollow and porous loads, including handpieces, tubing and textile packs. This is the standard for dental and surgical practice and the safe default if you are unsure.
Buy the class your instruments require, not the class your budget prefers. Reprocessing hollow instruments in a Class N autoclave does not sterilise them.
Sizing it properly
This is where clinics most commonly get it wrong. Chamber capacity is stated in litres — typically 8 to 12 L for small units, 17 to 23 L for practice-scale machines.
Size against your busiest session, not your daily average:
- Count the instrument sets used between sterilisation runs on your heaviest day
- Add the trays, wrapping and spacing those sets actually occupy — packs cannot be stacked tightly
- Add headroom for growth
An undersized autoclave forces extra cycles mid-session. That is not merely inconvenient — it is the precise pressure under which staff start reusing instruments before the cycle completes.
Also check the cycle time, including drying. A machine with a nominal 20-minute cycle and a 25-minute drying phase has a 45-minute turnaround.
Features that matter in practice
- Printer or data logging — a record of cycle parameters is what makes your process defensible. Increasingly expected at inspection.
- Automatic air-detection or vacuum test cycle — verifies the machine is doing what it claims
- Water quality requirement — most units need distilled or demineralised water. Factor in the ongoing supply; using tap water destroys chambers.
- Automatic water fill and drain — saves meaningful staff time daily
- Drying performance — packs must come out dry. A damp pack is not a sterile pack, because moisture wicks contamination through the wrapping.
- Door safety interlock — non-negotiable
Validation: proving it worked
Sterilisation is a process you must be able to demonstrate, not assume. A layered routine:
- Process indicators on the outside of every pack — these confirm the pack went through a cycle, nothing more
- Chemical indicators inside packs — confirm conditions were reached within the pack
- Biological indicators at the interval your protocol specifies — the actual proof of sterilisation
- Vacuum / air-removal tests per the manufacturer’s schedule for Class B units
- Cycle records retained, with load contents noted
Follow the protocol applicable to your practice and your regulator. Keep the records where an inspector can find them.
Running costs to budget for
- Distilled or demineralised water
- Sterilisation pouches and wrapping
- Chemical and biological indicators
- Door seals — a wear item, replaced periodically
- Annual service and validation
- Electricity: autoclaves draw substantial power during heating
Ask for the annual service cost before purchase. On a machine this size it is a meaningful line item, and a supplier who cannot tell you is not the supplier who will service it.

- Cycle class, matched to your actual instruments
- Chamber capacity against your busiest session
- Full cycle time including drying
- Water quality requirement
- Recording or printing capability
- Warranty scope, service interval and who performs it locally
- Spare-part lead time for seals and valves
