Caring for a bedridden elderly parent at home: the equipment that makes it possible

Bringing an elderly parent home from hospital to be cared for in bed is one of the hardest things a family does. The equipment does not make it easy. It makes it possible — for months, not weeks — without the caregiver breaking down first.

This is the setup we recommend, in the order that matters.

First: decide which room

Before buying anything, choose the room. It should have space on both sides of the bed if at all possible — it halves the effort of every turn and change. It needs power points near the bed head, a route to the bathroom, good light, ventilation, and somewhere for the caregiver to sit and sleep. A ground-floor room near the family, not a quiet room at the far end of the house.

Priority 1 — before the patient arrives

The bed

A hospital bed with adjustable backrest and, ideally, height adjustment. Raising the bed for care and lowering it for transfers is what saves the caregiver’s back. If the patient needs repositioning several times a day, buy electric. See our hospital bed guide.

The mattress

Not an ordinary mattress. An air bed or water bed — our comparison explains which suits which patient. This is the single most important purchase for a bedridden person.

Toileting

A commode chair beside the bed, plus a bedpan and urinal for nights. If the patient cannot be transferred at all, adult diapers and underpads from day one.

Anything the discharge summary specifies

Oxygen concentrator, suction, feeding equipment — at the prescribed specification.

Priority 2 — the first week

• Side rails — for safety and for the patient to hold when repositioning
• Overbed table — meals, medicines, phone, a book. Restores independence.
• Slide sheet — lets one person reposition a patient up the bed without lifting
• Transfer belt — for sit-to-stand and bed-to-chair moves
• Heel and elbow protectors — the heels are where sores form fastest
• Positioning pillows or wedges — for side-lying and raised legs
• BP monitor, pulse oximeter, thermometer — so the family has numbers for the doctor
• Bedside locker — medicines and supplies within the caregiver’s reach

Priority 3 — hygiene and consumables

• Adult diapers in the correct size — see our sizing guide
• Underpads for the bed
• No-rinse cleansing foam, wet wipes, barrier cream
• Disposable gloves, a covered bin, hand sanitiser at the bedside
• Hair-wash tray and basin for bed baths
• Air cushion if the patient sits up in a chair

Buy consumables at wholesale rates once the size and brand are settled — over months, they cost more than the bed did.

Protecting the caregiver

This is the part families skip, and it is the reason home care collapses. The caregiver is usually a spouse in their sixties or seventies, or a daughter who is also running a household.

• Height-adjustable bed — no bending over a low bed for every task
• Slide sheet and transfer belt — technique instead of strength
• Patient lift if the patient cannot help at all — a hoist removes the lifting entirely. See our patient lift guide.
• A second person for turns where possible, at least in the early weeks
• Rest. A caregiver who has not slept makes mistakes with medicines and transfers.

When our technician installs the bed, they train the family on how to turn, reposition and transfer safely. Ask them to show you twice.

The daily routine the equipment supports

1. Reposition on the schedule the nurse advised
2. Check skin daily at sacrum, heels, hips, elbows, shoulder blades
3. Keep skin clean and dry; change promptly when soiled
4. Sit the patient up for meals where allowed
5. Record BP, oxygen, temperature and anything unusual for the doctor
6. Inspect the mattress pump, cables and castors weekly
