Choosing a BP monitor and glucometer for home
The most common cause of wrong readings at home is not a faulty machine. It is the wrong cuff size and the wrong arm position.

Home monitoring only helps if the numbers are right. Most inaccurate readings we hear about are not caused by faulty machines — they are caused by the wrong cuff, the wrong posture, or measuring at inconsistent times.

Upper arm vs wrist
Upper arm monitors are the recommended choice for home use. They are less sensitive to positioning and generally more consistent.
Wrist monitors are compact and useful where an upper-arm cuff cannot be applied — a very large arm, an injury, a lymphoedema restriction. But the wrist must be held exactly at heart level, and small deviations change the reading meaningfully. Choose one only for a specific reason.
Cuff size is the accuracy decision
This is the point most buyers miss. Measure the upper arm circumference midway between shoulder and elbow, and match it against the cuff’s stated range.
- Cuff too small → falsely high readings, sometimes substantially
- Cuff too large → falsely low readings
Standard cuffs typically cover about 22–32 cm. Large cuffs are available and should be bought where needed — a well-known brand with the wrong cuff is less accurate than a modest brand with the right one.
Features worth having
- Clinical validation — ask whether the model has been validated against a recognised protocol
- Memory for multiple readings, and ideally two users
- Irregular heartbeat indicator, useful as a prompt to mention it to the doctor
- Averaging of consecutive readings
- Mains adapter option if the device is used several times a day
Measuring correctly
- Sit and rest quietly for five minutes first
- Back supported, feet flat on the floor, legs uncrossed
- Arm supported on a table with the cuff at heart level
- Cuff on bare skin, not over a sleeve
- Do not talk during the reading
- Take two or three readings a minute apart and record all of them
- Measure at the same times each day
Bring the record to consultations. A pattern over weeks is far more useful to a doctor than a single number.
Glucometers
Judge the strips, not the meter
Meters are frequently sold at low margin because the test strips are the recurring cost. Before choosing a system, ask:
- What does a box of strips cost, and how many are in it?
- Are strips reliably stocked locally?
- What is the strip expiry, and how long after opening the vial do they remain valid?
For someone testing twice daily, strip cost over a year dwarfs the meter price. A meter whose strips are hard to find locally is a meter that will sit unused.
Other considerations
- Sample size — smaller blood volume means a less painful lancet prick, which matters for adherence
- Result time — typically 5–10 seconds
- Display — large digits and backlight if the user has reduced vision
- Memory and averaging — helpful for reviewing trends
- Coding — no-code meters remove a step where errors happen
- Control solution — lets you verify the meter is reading correctly; ask whether it is available
Testing correctly
- Wash and dry hands — food residue on fingers skews results significantly
- Use the side of the fingertip, not the pad; it hurts less and bleeds more readily
- Rotate fingers between tests
- Use a fresh lancet each time
- Store strips in their original vial, capped, away from heat and humidity — relevant in Kerala’s climate
- Check the expiry date on the vial
Also worth having at home
A pulse oximeter for anyone with a respiratory condition, and a reliable digital thermometer. Both are inexpensive and both give a clinician something concrete to work with over the phone.

Upper arm monitors are generally more reliable and are what most clinicians recommend for home use. Wrist monitors are sensitive to wrist position relative to the heart and can read inaccurately if held wrongly. Choose a wrist monitor only if an upper-arm cuff cannot be used.
Measure the circumference of the upper arm midway between shoulder and elbow, and match it to the cuff's stated range. A cuff that is too small reads falsely high; too large reads falsely low. This affects accuracy more than the choice of brand.
Judge it on the ongoing cost and availability of its test strips, not the meter price. Meters are often sold cheaply because the strips are the real cost. Confirm the strips are stocked locally before committing to a system.
Follow the schedule your doctor sets — it differs by condition and medication. Generally, take BP readings after five minutes seated and rested, at the same times each day, and record them so the pattern is visible at the next consultation.
